There is no doubt that many of you are aware of my passion for Soviet Paratroopers. At one point I went as far as making a whole book about a particular regiment. But this book only touches the paratroopers who actively participated in Afghanistan War. But there is so much more to this topic. Let’s dig in together!
History
Prior to WW2, the Soviet war ministry was very interested in airborne operations. Some training exercises were conducted before the war ended. However, as the war progressed, less attention was paid to airborne assaults. Efforts were put into establishing paratroopers as a separate branch of the armed forces. One particular man is associated with Soviet paratroopers, and this person is Vasiliy Margelov. Having been a supporter of these forces for many years, he singlehandedly transformed them into a unique branch that wasn’t just infantrymen with wings patches. The ideas and developments he pioneered are still being used today – post Soviet countries have airborne units equipped with significantly different weapons than their ground-based counterparts.
Photographs
The Paratroopers were the most popular branch of service within the Soviet Army. And they were immensely proud of the experience they received after completing their service. Ex servicemen would post photographs of soviet paratroopers everywhere, which is why we can now find many pictures of them.
Today I am sharing photographs of following units with you: 345th Regiment (outside Afghanistan), 237th Regiment and most albums are in 337th Regiment.
As I am personally very much into this topic – more photos will be found and uploaded soon.
